City of the Jaguar

Following the discovery of an ancient lost city in unexplored Mosquitia jungle in Honduras, a team of anthropologists flew in to explore the ruins of the little-understood culture that once neighbored the Maya. The expedition drew worldwide attention, published in National Geographic Magazine and profiled in Douglas Preston's New York Times #1 bestseller The Lost City of the Monkey God.

  • An artifact excavated during the expedition.
  • Team specialists Anna Cohen, in plaid shirt, Chris Fisher in IPA t-shirt, Juan Carlos Fernandez Diaz in kaki shirt,, Oscar Neil Cruz in black t-shirt, and Alicia Gonzalez in blue shirt, reviewing LiDAR images and maps before their foray into the jungle to search for a lost city in the Mosquitia in Honduras. From an airfield near Catacamas, Honduran soldiers, former British SAS commandos and scientists penetrated the Mosquitia jungle by helicopter to investigate structures left by an ancient culture that were neighbors to the Maya.

  • Apparently virgin jungle in a valley hides the remains of an ancient civilization.
  • Evidence of deforestation threatening the archeological sites was to be seen everywhere between Catacamas and the sites. Most of the deforestation seems to be blamed on cattle grazing, though there are other factors as well.
